Dr Stephen P. Glasby from the University of Western Australia’s Centre for the Mathematics of Symmetry and Computation visited Dr Simon Smith at the University of Lincoln School of Mathematics and Physics this week.

Industrial and Financial Mathematics module in Lincoln


Mathematics students in their second year gave great feedback on their Industrial and Financial Mathematics module. This module is intended to showcase some of the industrial applications of mathematics, with an emphasis in the second half on finance.

A series of guest lectures were given by people from industry who use mathematics in their line of work. Talks were given by people who have worked in:

  • Tech (Google)
  • Banking (Goldman Sachs and Santander)
  • Logistics (SYSTRA)
  • Engineering (Siemens)
  • Medicine (University Medical Center Groningen)

Students also had to produce a report for a simulated food-tech start-up in which they used big data analytical techniques to help launch a new product line.

AMS Special Session at Hunter College, City University of New York

The Special Session on Infinite Permutation Groups, Totally Disconnected Locally Compact Groups and Geometric Group Theory organised by Simon Smith (University of Lincoln) and Delaram Kahrobaei (City University of New York) took place this weekend, as part of the huge American Mathematical Society Spring Eastern Sectional Meeting held at Hunter College, City University of New York.

The idea behind the special session was to bring together three areas of infinite group theory that share a powerful tool: the analysis of group structure through an action on a locally finite graph. Subdegree-finite permutation groups act on an orbital graph, finitely generated groups act on a Cayley graph, and compactly generated totally disconnected locally compact groups act on a Cayley–Abels graph.

In the Special Session there were speakers from across the world: USA, Australia, Europe and South America. The talks were excellent. James Maynard (University of Oxford) gave the prestigious Erdös Memorial Lecture to the entire Sectional Meeting, where he spoke about his work on finding large gaps in the prime numbers.

Simon Smith (University of Lincoln, UK) and Delaram Kahrobaei (City University of New York, USA) are organising a conference on infinite permutation groups, totally disconnected locally compact groups, and geometric group theory. It is a special session at the American Mathematical Society Eastern Meeting, and will take place at the City University of New York on May 6th-7th 2017.

Simon Smith was at the Banff International Research Station last week


Last week, Simon Smith was at the Banff International Research Station (BIRS) in Canada, where he was an invited speaker at a meeting about permutation groups. BIRS is an isolated station nestled in the Rocky Mountains, where researchers from around the world are invited to discuss and to work collaboratively on important areas of research.
The focus of this meeting was on the interplay between permutation group theory, topological group theory and model theory. Simon gave a lecture on a theorem of his which describes the structure of subdegree-finite primitive permutation groups. This theorem took many years to prove, and is the culmination of a large research project for which he was awarded a grant of over $300,000 by the Australian Research Council.

Simon Smith gave a lecture on his latest research at the University of Leeds on Tuesday


Simon Smith visited the University of Leeds this week, to give a talk in their Algebra Seminar on his new product for permutation groups, called the box product. The box product can be used to produce the very first construction of an uncountable family of topological groups that are compactly generated, tdlc and simple.

Dr Florian Lehner in Lincoln


Florian Lehner is visiting Simon Smith at the University of Lincoln from 10th October 2016 until 15th October 2016. Florian is visiting from the University of Hamburg. Simon and Florian will be working together to understand how to manipulate combinatorial structures so that they no longer have any symmetry. This is part of a long term research project that the two have been collaborating on for a number of years.
